Red Bull King of the Air

JUDGES

This team of experts has been chosen to accurately identify the epic manoeuvres that are taking place and choosing the 2017 Red Bull King of the Air winner.

Alex Vliege

Holland

Alex brings with him a long history of head judging experience, including several years on the KPWT World Tour, the Len10 Megaloop Challenge, the Red Bull Above NAP, and the 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016 instalments of Red Bull King of the Air. According to Alex, the vibe at King of the Air events is unrivalled by any kiteboarding event that he has attended.

He started the Endless Summer Beach house, The Mystic House, and the High Five Kitesurf School in Cape Town; where he regularly accommodates the best riders in the world.

Alex will be taking on the responsibilities again of head judge, where he will ensure that judging is fair and consistent and that the riders, who deserve to be on the podium, make it onto the podium.

Greg Thijsse

South Africa

Local Cape Town kiter, Greg Thijsse, joins the judging panel for the fourth time in 2016.

Greg, who was a previous national champion and PKRA World Tour competitor, left competing internationally in 2008 to pursue his studies and start a business here in South Africa.

He has a clear understanding of the business of separating yourself as a rider in any competition, and he believes that the bar has been set by the previous two events, and that kiteboarding will only get bigger and better.

Jean Giovannoni

France

PKRA judge
European junior cup head judge
International junior championships  judge
Red Bull Snowkitemaster judge
China national championship head judge
X’trem Air head judge

Currently WKL (World Kiteboarding League) head judge.

Arek Jerzelkowski

Poland

Arek, all the way from Poland, brings twelve years of judging experience with him, and a rich history not only  in kiteboarding but surfing and wakeboarding as well. He is also heavily involved in the R&D and manufacturing of kitesurfing equipment.

From a technical perspective, Arek is looking for riders who inject as much style into their rides as possible, while still pushing the limits.

Reinier Korstanje

Holland

Reinier, from the southwest coast of Holland began kitesurfing at the age of 13 in 1998 and in 2004 claimed a Dutch freestyle Championship title.

He went on to compete on the PKRA World Tour but called his pro riding career short when he broke his foot during a risky kite loop 3 – exactly the kind of explosive move he’ll be assessing at Red Bull King of the Air.

Reinier went on to study design at Eindhoven University and last year moved to live permanently in Cape Town, working for Prolimit, designing vital kitesurfing accessories and safety equipment. He made a brief comeback to compete in the 2012 Len10 Megaloop challenge and has a deep knowledge of the rules and procedures required at such a high level event.

Christopher "Chris" Bull

England

Chris Bull, founder of CBK Hayling Island Ltd, is one of the pioneers of kitesurfing in the UK, and has competed and judged at National and International level. He has been running his kiteschool and shop on Hayling Island since 1999 and now also runs the busiest kitesurfing club in the UK.

Chris has had a 10 year involvement with kitesurfing UK’s governing body, the BKSA, and over this time he has trained instructors, advised on beach risk assessments, and developed the BKSA’s youth training policy. Kiteworld kitesurfing magazine is lucky to have Chris as Senior Test Editor.

Cape Town has been graced by Chris’s presence every year since 2000. No stranger to megaloops himself Chris is looking forward to Red Bull King of the Air 2016.

“It’s amazing to watch and the standard will, as always, be exceptionally high!”

Sportive Director

Sergio Cantagalli

Italy

The name, Sergio Cantagalli, is synonymous with every kite related sport.

Sergio has made the most of his 30 years of extreme sports experience. These days, his professional activities are connected to an extreme sports company known as SURFCONCEPT, which offers a wide range of initiatives, technical as well as promotional.

Contest Director

Olaf van Tol

Holland

Olaf, who spent 14 years as a pro windsurfer on the PWA tour, will be working alongside Sergio to make sure the event goes off without any glitches.

In his time as a professional he won many European and international competitions before returning to the PWA World Tour as an international judge, and then as a Contest Director and head protest judge.

Olaf worked for 2 years as a judge and 13 years as contest director on the PKRA kite world tour. For the past year he has been part of establishing and working as the contest director on the new Freestyle and Big Air World Kiteboarding League Tour which has elevated the sport onto another level.
